Power project switches on |
|
|
|
|
Monday, 11 August 2008 02:00 |
Certain areas in Richards Bay experienced the first planned power
outages on Wednesday as the City of uMhlathuze commenced a month-long
process to connect its new substation onto the existing network.
Hailed as the largest electrical capital project in the history of the
City, construction is well underway of a new 300 megawatts high voltage
substation. At a capital cost of R67-million, the new substation called
Neptune will be situated within the Port of Richards Bay and is
expected to be complete by June 2009. But, in order to connect the new
substation onto the existing network, an entire portion of the high
voltage backbone system had to be isolated on Wednesday to undertake
the connection in a safe manner.

Power crisis - smelter suspense |
|
|
|
|
Monday, 18 February 2008 02:00 |
Could the Hillside and Bayside smelters be closed down as a national power crisis solution?
That was the speculation raging through Richards Bay over the weekend,
prompted by fears for the jobs of thousands at the smelters and
elsewhere in the Alton industrial area.
BHP Billiton refused to comment - and did not issue reassurance to its
staff that their jobs are safe - on speculation that power utility
Eskom is seeking a complete power supply buy-back from aluminium
smelters and other industrial users in the region this year.
The Reuters reports, which first surfaced in the media last Wednesday,
raised alarm among local employees and jitters in the markets about the
future certainty of the Richards Bay smelters.

|
|
Wednesday, 02 January 2008 19:00 |
An estimated 100 000 people descended on Alkantstrand in Richards Bay for the annual New Year beach celebrations.
And
despite one drowning at the nearby Bay Hall area, authorities did a
remarkable job of controlling bathers, traffic and general human
movement.
Numbers peaked in the late afternoon and taxi shuttles
continued through the night, ferrying the public to and from the beach.
Traffic banked up for kilometres along the John Ross Highway and once
again residents of Meerensee suffered major disruption and
inconvenience.

The Hotrods make a welcome return as these rotary powered 320bhp
animals are only one second shy of the Sprint Car times.

Taking a steady approach on a very wet and muddy

Jason the championship he well deserved to win on his Yamaha YZF450. Jason has been a Ride High Yamaha sponsored rider for four years and before that he was a Yamaha support rider.
He has always been in the top three winners of the KZN Quad 450 off road championship. |

Wetland Park welcomes rains |

Although the drought in the region remains severe, the state of the St Lucia Estuary remains healthy.
This
despite seawater flowing into the lake system for 175 days after the
mouth breached in March following a combination of high seas caused by
Cyclone Gamede, strong onshore winds and exceptionally high tides.
The
mouth has since closed naturally (45 days ago) preventing more sea
water from entering the system. According to authorities, salinity is
fairly stable at 36ppt (36 grams of salt per litre of water) from March
to date.

Sunday morning 9am saw the start of the RBM Duathlon which kicked off at the Zululand Multi Sports Club (ZMSC).
The event was a fantastic success, catering for young and old, new and seasoned, families and friends.
With
varying distances, the course was challenging on all levels. The usual
run / cycle combination of the duathlon was altered to reflect all the
sporting disciplines offered by the ZMSC.
This meant that
participants could choose to do a run / road cycle, walk / cycle, run /
off-road cycle, run / canoe or enter in the the new kite-surf duathlon
category (though a lack of morning winds resulted in a lengthy delay to
the start of the latter).

The R40-million contract for two rail bridges on the John Ross Highway (P496) was awarded last week.
Leomat Construction, Mfihleleni Construction and Cele Construction
Joint Venture will build the John Ross and Smelter Road-over-rail
bridges due for completion on 10 September 2008.
At the monthly
meeting of the John Ross Highway Project Liaison Committee on
Wednesday, members were told that the start of the major Nseleni
Floodplain and Nsezi River Bridge contract had been delayed because the
successful tenderer had submitted an alternative design proposal.
The new design, if accepted, could save R7-million of the R257-million tender.
Completion
date for the new road remains 10 June 2009 and could even be two months
earlier, with rehab of the present highway scheduled to be completed in
March 2010.

|
|
Thursday, 07 June 2007 05:31 |

Richards Bay will soon have its own version of Cape Town's popular V&A Waterfront.
The Umhlathuze municipal council is planning to develop a
multimillion-rand waterfront and marina to boost tourism and broaden
its tax base.
City mayor Denny Moffat said recently: "The project has been on the
cards for a number of years. We are taking maximum advantage of our
coastal location and high demand for beach holiday apartments and
recreational facilities."
The project, which is still in its initial phases, will spread over 100
hectares of land. Areas around Mzingazi Canal Steel Bridge, Alkanstrand
and Pelican Island are part of the land to be transformed into luxury
apartments, a hotel and a conference centre. |
